A short biography of Robin James

Robin James is the gifted illustrator of the best selling Serendipity books (Serendipity is the cute pink winking creature above). She was born into a family of artists. A native of the Pacific Northwest, Robin has loved art and animals all of her life and has been drawing ever since she could hold a pencil. Through the years, she has done a wide variety of artwork from animal portraits to wildlife paintings and is perhaps most recognized for her children’s book illustrations which she began in 1973. She has illustrated over 75 children’s books, and is published worldwide.

Robin has an enormous love of animals and nature that is evident in her illustrations. She currently resides at Morning Star Ranch and Gallery in picturesque Snohomesh, Washington. Not surprisingly, she and her husband, Randy live with a happy menagerie of animals all of whom have inspired her illustrations including Mary a rescued greyhound, three cats, four horses and a flock of pet chickens!

I was first exposed to Robin's illustrations as a child. The Serendipity books were my favorite books to read. I remember just staring at the pictures of fanciful creatures and wishing that I could live in that world. Robin uses bright vibrant colors and gives her illustrations a softness that I find both interesting and welcoming. She emphasizes fun and fantasy in her work, even when illustrating real animals. Even as an adult, I still love looking at her work. It helps me remember what it felt like as a child to imagine the world in a more beautiful and fantastic way.
